Cozy Christmas Home Tour: Modern Traditional Holiday Decorating Ideas

Get ready to catch some holiday spirit! Today is the day I am sharing my annual Cozy Christmas Home Tour, and I’m over the moon excited to show you how I incorporate modern traditional decorating ideas into our small home. From a show-stopping wall of wreaths to several tabletop Christmas trees, I’m covering every space that makes our house feel special this season. Grab a mug of hot cocoa or your favorite cocktail and let the decorating inspiration begin!

Cocktails at the Entryway for Holiday parties

Setting the tone for Christmas.

Let’s begin the tour with a pretty cocktail right here at our back entryway. This is the door that family and friends enter from, and when it’s Christmastime, I love to have a welcoming drink—whether it’s cocktails or hot chocolate—waiting to greet them. Today, I am featuring an Apple Cider-Pomegranate Spritzer that my daughters absolutely loved last year and have already requested for this season!

You’ll also find my first tabletop mini-tree (one of four) here, along with one of my favorite Christmas prints: a beautiful Partridge in a Pear Tree.

Decorating A Kitchen for Christmas:

My kitchen leans modern with open shelving above our serving area. I like to keep things simple here to prevent that “too cluttered” feeling from overwhelming the space.

Under the shelves, I’ve added a few DIY velvet mini-trees and some pretty pieces that are ready for entertaining, but aside from that, I like to keep the countertop clutter to a minimum.

I am obsessed with the pretty “real touch” garland I found this season. I hung it along with my new favorite fairy string lights over the windows. Later in the season, I plan to add a paper chain garland to introduce a pop of burgundy, which will beautifully tie in with the other spaces throughout the house.

Touring our Dining Area Decked out for Christmas.

Our dining area may be small, but it certainly gets busy during the holidays! This little space hosts everything from cozy meals and coffee breaks to snacks and, of course, some epic card games (we are huge Euchre fans here).

Given how much use this space gets, it seemed like the perfect place to create a wreath wall. I made most of the wreaths myself, but the gorgeous burgundy setaria wreath and the blueberry wreath are pieces I picked up from Anthropologie. Over the bookcase, you’ll find one of my absolute favorite ways to add a little holiday cheer: framed Christmas wrapping paper! It’s inexpensive, quick, and a fantastic way to bring a festive feel to your walls.

Mixing Traditional Christmas Colors in our Living Room.

Our living room sofa is brown, and I absolutely love it. It may be the single best sofa I have ever owned! It feels like you are lying on clouds, and the fact that it’s both brown and slipcovered is perfection, especially since we use this house as a vacation rental during the summer.

However, it’s not the easiest color to “festive up,” especially when you’re working with a brown sofa and a blue rug combo. I ended up embracing the brown as the perfect neutral base. First, I layered in a fluffy faux fur throw, along with deep burgundy pillows. I also added some pretty peace dove garland with burgundy ribbon and hung it over the doorways. Over on the wall to the left is another example of swapping out art for seasonal prints.

A small, live Norfolk Island Pine tree sits in a lovely woven basket, decorated simply with just a string of lights—I love the beautiful glow it casts at night, and it keeps the look neutral. It’s definitely giving off a traditional vibe, but I really adore the beautiful color combination it achieved.

The Main Event: Tucked Away & Twinkling

Since the house is so small, and this is our first Christmas celebrating here, I was initially stumped about where to put the main Christmas tree. Ultimately, I landed on using my home office as the centerpiece of our tree.

I was concerned I might miss having the tree front and center, but the living room has great sightlines into the space, so it ended up being a perfect solution! I think the extra room will also come in handy for gift opening, especially since we have two toddlers visiting again this year.

My home office also holds my vertical plant wall (which has done so well in this space!). And I just decided to add some pretty touches to that, too.

I adore the extra sparkle with the sparkling lights!
