For the cost of a gallon of paint and a few supplies, even the most inexperienced DIYer can add a huge impact to their home’s curb appeal in a weekend.

Don’t be intimidated!

Here are the supplies you’ll need to paint your front door:

MATERIALS:

• Sandpaper Block- Fine Grit
• Paint brush- I love this brand
• Low nap or foam roller brush and tray
• Screwdriver- to remove door hardware
• Frog Tape
• Drop Cloth
• Quart of Paint
• Rags
• Step ladder

Prep Your Door:

Check the condition of your door.

Begin by cleaning the door with a degreaser/crime cleaner like TSP, then rinse thoroughly and let dry.

Is your door peeling, or is the old paint cracking?

If so, you may need to thoroughly sand or strip the paint until smooth.

If not, YAY!

Next, lightly sand with the fine-grit sandpaper and wipe clean with a tack cloth (fuzz-free).

Don’t forget this step.

It helps remove any dirt, bugs, and anything else that will interfere with the paint adhering for the long term.

What color are you painting over?

If you are going from dark to light, you may want to prime the door.

I went from Green to Blue, and I am using quality paint with a primer included from Sherwin Williams so I won’t have to separately prime.

Tape off or remove your hardware.

Choosing your front door paint:

Choose a high-quality exterior paint that will hold up to the elements.

I am using latex-based paint with primer built-in because my door is made of wood and in good condition.

If your door is metal, you may want to consider an oil-based paint to help stave off rust.

Painting your front door

You are ready to paint!

Use your brush to paint any insets on your door.

My favorite paint brushes are slightly angled, so the paint easily gets into the nooks and crannies.

To prevent brush strokes, paint in the same direction.

Once the insets are painted, then use the roller brush to paint all the flat areas.

Let dry for four to six hours if you use water-based paint and overnight if oil-based.

Repeat for a second coat.

Please Note:

Temperature is essential for painting.

Don’t paint if it’s less than 50 degrees outside.

Keep leftover paint for touch-ups as needed.

I choose a bright blue (Indigo by Sherwin-Williams) for our front door (ties it in with the lake).

We also painted our shutters black.

Updating your front door is easy, and I did it in a weekend!

Yay, for the power of paint.

It added a great deal of curb appeal for very little money.

A bonus was that the front door made a lovely spot for my daughter and her husband when they married at our house last summer.
