Behold! My primary bedroom refresh: A relaxing retreat revealed. After weeks of hard work, I’m thrilled to unveil my transformed space— and it’s everything I dreamed of and more! What a wonderful way to end this season of the One Room Challenge!!

Primary Bedroom Transformation

We had eight weeks to transform our primary bedroom from the 90’s open space concept to a relaxing retreat. I wanted it to be beautiful, but I also wanted to address a few things that have annoyed me since we bought the house during this remodel.

I created a mood board to help me visualize the space and plan my design. The mood board included images of calming colors and tons of natural textures. I also had a few images of furniture and décor ideas that I wanted to incorporate into the design. I love a mood board at the beginning of a new project; it helps me stay focused.

The very first thing I chose was a grasscloth wallpaper to use as an accent wall that we DIY’d and basically designed everything else in the room around it.

I cannot tell you how much I love this wall! The texture is gorgeous and adds a touch of sophistication to the room. I found it at Grasscloth and More.

For the bedding, I kept the white quilt and then added the brown Pillow Shams and Bed Blanket from the Nate Berkus line on Amazon. I love the blanket’s texture and weight, and it washes beautifully ( a bonus when you have a 117 lb Great Pyrenees).

The Green Velvet Bolster is from Etsy.

I debated on a headboard but ultimately decided I couldn’t cover up any of the wallpaper yet, but I may add one later.

Dark and Dreary to Warm and Inviting.

One of the significant problems with the primary bedroom was the lack of lighting. The original builder-grade fixtures were outdated and provided very little light. This made the room dark and dreary, making it difficult to see well enough to read or work. Kuzco Lighting gifted me this beautiful Rubio fan in White that has a light, and I could not love it more. I am #TEAMFAN for sleeping, and adding a fan with a light has made the room function so much better. I also added dimmers on the lighting, which is simple but adds so much ambiance.

We also have a pair of sconces to go above the end tables, and they are being installed this week. They are white with antique gold hardware. They will make reading (and blogging) from bed so much nicer.

From “OPEN DOOR” Concept to Private and Relaxing

Another problem with the primary bedroom was the open doorway. I’ve often wondered who thought having an open door into the bathroom was a good idea. From the bathtub, I could see straight out onto our back patio and past that to the lake, where my neighbors often fish. It never felt comfortable. So we decided to use this refresh to remedy that.

We chose a sliding door instead of a pocket door because a pocket door would have required construction on the closets. We decided to DIY the door, and Emtek generously gifted us the beautiful sliding barn door hardware to hang the door with.

Now for the fun stuff.

A cozy chair in a bedroom is always a must for me. I like to enjoy a morning cup of coffee and admire the view of the lake. This Modern Barrel Swivel Chair was gifted by my friends at Wovenbyrd and will make those sunrises extra cozy. The concrete wood-looking end table gives me a place for my reading glasses and mug.

The dresser we’ve had for years is from RH.

I added some framed prints from Artfully Walls.

I looked for weeks for matching end tables. Then I remembered I had a couple in storage that I had not used. They were grasscloth, and the color was not going to work. So, I decided to paint them SW Retreat and see if that worked. I experimented a bit, but It did! I love the texture, and as a bonus, I was able to use something I already had.

Tips and Tricks for Primary Bedroom Refresh

Add an oversized rug under the bed. I chose this large-scale floral print rug as a statement. This is a queen-sized bed; we used an 8 x 10 rug underneath. It is nice to step out of bed onto a rug, but even more importantly, it looks proportionate. I would have added a 9 x 12 rug if we had a King size bed.

Window Coverings- I usually would have hung this curtain rod even higher, but I needed to get the rods into studs as the rod is quite wide (and heavy). We did expand it 6 inches on each side past the actual window so that I am not losing any natural light. I also made sure they just “kiss” the ground.
