Hello everyone! Today, I’m excited to share a simple and budget-friendly DIY project that transformed our main bedroom: a stunning headboard made from reclaimed wood tiles. I wanted to create a warm and inviting focal point for the room, and this project perfectly complements the soothing blue-grey walls (Benjamin Moore’s “Sweatshirt Grey”). Plus, since we’ll be renting out our home for part of the year, a durable wood headboard is much easier to maintain than an upholstered one. Let’s dive in!

1. What Product Did I Use?

I knew I wanted something made from wood, and I remembered seeing wood tiles when I was searching for tiles for the front of my kitchen peninsula. I love the texture that it adds to the kitchen, and I thought it would be cool as a headboard.

So, I went back to the internet and found several types of wood tiles until I came across this one.

I knew this was the one! It was made from reclaimed boat wood, perfect for our home, which is located in a beach community. I also debated this pattern and will keep it in mind for future projects.

For the headboard project, I needed 21 pieces of 12×12 (slightly smaller than advertised at 11.75 x 11.75) decorative wall panels/tiles. These are very durable and feature varying natural wood tones, adding a rustic charm to the headboard. The mesh backing makes installation a breeze!

2. Prepping the Product

While I fell in love with the idea of the natural wood tones, when they arrived, the color variation wasn’t as dramatic as I’d hoped. Some reviews I read online had mentioned this, so I was prepared! I decided to color-wash a few tiles with grey and blue stains to create more contrast. This added a lovely depth and dimension to the finished pieces.

A few of the pieces of wood were loose, and I needed to glue them back to the mesh.

3. Installing the Wood Tile Headboard

My husband cut a piece of plywood to the desired size for the headboard. (If you don’t have a saw, your local hardware store can cut it for you.) I sanded the edges of the plywood to prevent splinters. We wanted the headboard to extend a couple of inches on either side of our queen-sized bed, resulting in a finished piece of 64 inches wide by 36 inches tall. This was the maximum height we could achieve due to the ceiling angle.

Next, we secured the plywood to the wall using drywall anchors in studs (4) and reinforced it with a pneumatic nail gun for extra Safety. Safety first! We don’t want this headboard coming off anyone’s head!

To minimize the number of nails we needed, we applied Loctite all-purpose glue to the back of each tile before attaching them to the plywood.

We started by placing a tile in the center and then filled in the spaces on either side, working left to right. This method made the installation process surprisingly quick and easy.

The blue painter’s tape showed me where the studs were to help make sure the headboard was secure.

My measurement of the plywood was slightly off, so I used a furniture pen to darken it to match the color of the wood tile (not shown).

4. The Finished Headboard

And voila! The finished headboard is absolutely stunning. This was a truly beginner-friendly DIY project, and I’m so pleased with how it turned out. The reclaimed wood adds a touch of rustic elegance to our bedroom and is the perfect complement to the soft grey walls.
