I can’t believe how this summer is flying by! I haven’t even had time to share the updates we made to our screened-in porch at the Lake. This season we took a closer look at how we were actually using the porch, decided to eliminate some things, and we were able to rearrange and add seating which greatly expanded our living/entertaining options! Now the entire family loves hanging out here.
The key to creating the perfect outdoor space is making it feel like an extension of your home. Think of an outdoor area the same way you’d think of your living room.
Adding Art makes your outdoor space feel more like a living space. I used an easy DIY for these prints.
Because I can see the screened-in porch from most of my indoor areas, I made sure the colors harmonize throughout both spaces. I’ve kept the furniture neutral and added color and textures with textiles just as I do inside my home.
Our nights get cool here in Northern Michigan so I add throws everywhere, throws, poufs and lots of cozy pillows.
I love mixing indoor and outdoor plants on porches and patios. The plants tend to grow really well for me outside—my favorite tip. Add fragrant plants to your seating areas, and you can’t help but appreciate the lovely scents as a breeze goes by. I have added Petunias, Lavender, and Rosemary to my porch this year.
Bring on the art! Why not?? For our screened-in porch update, I’ve used pieces that I coated with poly for added protection against the elements. I wouldn’t put anything up outdoors that is wildly expensive or treasured, but for example, the Be Kind piece below is on summer number three and is holding up well.
Accessories are my jam, and the quirkier, the better! Here I’ve added a bit of whimsical in a planter and a candlestick holder. A bonus, unique accessories are great conversation starters!
I love flowers of all kinds, and wildflowers seem perfect for porch sitting. These I added to a rattan pitcher, which feels like summer.
We are spending so much more time out here this year!

Your screened in porch turned out so pretty.
I grew up with one. I still love them. NJ summers are getting more and more humid. Being outside is no fun anymore
You’ve done a great job of styling your porch. I have always wanted a screened in porch or conservatory. It’s on my list! Thanks for sharing this.
