Welcome! This week is going to be a quick update on our kitchen refresh for the One Room Challenge. If you are new here, a big warm HELLO! Last week I shared my plans for the Spring One Room Challenge here, and this week, I am sharing a quick update. Quick because we are sooooo far behind already. I feel the need to note we only have weekends to work on the kitchen, and as usual, in a DIY project, we ran into snags.
A reminder of where we began.
Kitchen Before
Our first task was to remove the backsplash. No matter how hard or careful we were, the drywall came off with the tile. That tile was up for the long haul!
Whoomp Whoomp. This meant we have to replace the drywall.
Replacing the drywall took another trip to our friendly Home Depot and set us back an afternoon. Hubby installed the drywall, and we called it a day.
On Sunday, once that was complete, we made the first cuts on the butcher block. SO EXCITING!
I cannot tell you how happy I am. Everything is grooving….and then.

It’s hard to see, but the butcher block is warped. <insert big sigh and maybe a curse word here>. My husband nailed the cut, and we were so disappointed.
This curtailed the rest of our progress for the weekend until we can exchange the countertops.
In the meantime, it’s time to make backsplash decisions.
Tile choices??
I’m leaning toward the glass tile. It’s a little pop of color. I like the reflective properties, which I think will help bounce the light around, and it also blends with the travertine floor tile that I am living with for now.
That is the update for now. Whew, to be honest, we may have to reevaluate the weekend-only renovation pretty quickly!

I really like the crackly glass tile — I think it will go nicely with your paint color. But if you’re repainting, the green glass is gorgeous! Ugh, old house renos are never straight forward. Good luck!

Tile choices seem so much more important! My husband is not likely to want to switch this out again in a few years if I get tired of it. 🙂 Fingers crossed.
Oh – there’s nothing more frustrating when something you purchase turns out to be warped! But I love that updated look with the butcher block! We removed our travertine tile this week as well and what a difference it makes to get rid of that dated look. So glad to be tackling our kitchens together for this ORC!

We are on the same journey! We tore out our tile last weekend and are picking up our butcher block counters this weekend. That sucks that yours has to be replaced.
I like the glass tile also! That’s what we plan to use. I am so exited to be following along with another kitchen reno,

My advice is to lay them flat on the floor before you take them home. Ours looked fine when we picked them up! I’ll be cheering you on from afar! Good Luck.

I am sooo leaning towards the glass tile. I am still researching if it’s harder to work with than other materials?
My problem is that I like all the tile. It would be hard to choose one over the other. I am sad about the set back….I adore that butcher block though. I’d love some of that yummy wood goodness in my kitchen.

I have to say tile is my love language and I too love it all. It’s so hard to choose just one! I have narrowed it down to two so hopefully by the end of the weekend I will have the final choice.
Oh my, so sorry about the warped piece of countertop. Every project takes a couple more trips to the store than you plan, but I know it will come together. I love that glass tile too. It was the one that my eye went to first when I saw the photo. I hope its the one you chose!

You are so right! It seems we NEVER start a project where we are not back and forth to the store 4 or 5 times before it’s complete. We did exchange the countertops and are ready to get them installed this weekend! As for the glass tile it is still topping the list. 🙂
Oh no that is so frustrating. You all have made a lot of progress! Removing tile is not easy stuff. Hopefully it’s smooth sailing from here on out.

Tile remove is hard work but I love your choices, the glass block would be very easy to maintenance too as a backsplash but they are all good choices.
