Beach picnic with vintage suitcase as a table. Sangria and sandwiches for food and comfy cushions for relaxing

Date night idea-late summer picnic

A Late summer picnic- The perfect idea for a date night.

Recently my husband and I were in dire need of a date night.

Something casual and easy (we’ve been a bit busy) where we could sit and catch up with no distractions.

We live in a summer tourist community, so restaurants are very crowded this time of year, so I thought…hey, let’s have a picnic!

It seemed like a perfect idea for a late summer evening; I’ve always believed eating outdoors can add a magical quality to whatever the meal is.

Late summer picnic.

There is nothing better than squeezing in a picnic before the weather turns cooler.

Location

Although simple was important, I was also thinking romantic and special.

Because I was pulling this date night together last minute while running through some possible locations, I realized our little stretch of beach outside was the perfect location!

Bonus for being easy, and you can’t beat the proximity!

The vintage suitcase was the perfect table for our picnic

The first thing I did was drag an old vintage suitcase out and covered it with a tablecloth from Target.

Pretty and functional, don’t you think?

I grabbed a few vases and picked flowers from the yard.

Adding a blanket and some floor cushions from TJMaxx (similar here) assured us that we would be comfortable sitting for a few hours.

Picnic Food

I ordered sandwiches from our neighborhood deli (keeping it easy) and added some fruit and snacks from our kitchen.

What’s a picnic without a pretty cocktail, served in pretty glasses?

So, I whipped up a batch of my favorite blood orange sangria which is pretty and so so good.

Man cannot live on sandwiches alone

What about dessert?

Well, we have a firepit sitting right there, so of course, I opted for S’mores!

A firepit adds a touch of romance (and S’MORES)

Yum, I love my S’mores with Reese’s peanut butter cups!

My second favorite combo is with peppermint patties (the thin kind).

Have you tried either?

Who doesn’t love s’more at a picnic?

Our late summer picnic ended up being pure magic!

We watched the sunset, drank sangria long into the evening, and spent several hours talking about everything and nothing at all.

It turns out your backyard can bring a little magic to your late summer date nights.

I truly hope this inspires you to pull together whatever you have in your home and make your own magical date night.

Until Next time,

-Libbie
