Designing an English Cottage Kitchen on a Budget

WHEW! It’s that time of year again! If you’ve been looking for inspiration for designing an English cottage kitchen on a budget, you are in the right place. I am so excited to announce that I am jumping back into the Spring 2026 One Room Challenge®. YAY!

This isn’t my first time taking on a massive renovation under pressure—in fact, this is my 12th time participating in the ORC! I must be a glutton for punishment, but there is nothing like a community of designers and a hard eight-week deadline to get a project across the finish line. For this round, I’m tackling the heart of the home and sharing step by step the hows and whys and products I am using to create a high-end look without the high-end price tag.

Let’s begin with some before pics: View from the dining room area.

Creating an English Cottage Kitchen: Why it’s Perfect for Older Homes.

For this space, I am leaning heavily into a collected, cozy English cottage kitchen vibe. I’ve always felt this aesthetic is the ideal match for an older home because it honors the history and “soul” of a house. Instead of hiding the quirks under sleek, modern minimalism, the English cottage style embraces them.

My plan is to drench the space in a palette of deep greens and moody blues, then ground those cool tones with the natural warmth of wood. I want it to feel like it’s been there for decades—full of soul, texture, and a bit of a “story.” This is my mood board.

I plan to find a vintage dresser or chest to replace the cabinet next to the stove (which is in awful shape). I will put a marble piece or butcher block on top for both warmth and functionality.

A checkerboard floor seems like the perfect bridge between English cottage style and the turn-of-the-century home.

The $3750 Budget: Renovating a Short-Term Rental Kitchen

Now, let’s talk numbers. This kitchen is part of a larger renovation of a house we are converting into two separate apartments that will become furnished rentals. Because we are juggling two full renovations at once, the budget is TIGHT.

This will take plenty of sweat equity.

Our total budget for this kitchen is $3,750.00. EEP.

Since we need a fridge, dishwasher, flooring, countertops, backsplash, door, paint, lighting, and a new sink/faucet, we have to be extremely strategic. We are crossing every finger and toe that the current stove still works! We have exactly eight weeks to turn this dated space into a furnished rental, and we will be DIYing as much as humanly possible to stretch every dollar.

I’ll be sharing the “behind the scenes,” the inevitable DIY fails (I have a sweatshirt that reads, I am pretty sure that my final words will be, ‘well $hit, that didn’t go as planned”), and the real-time progress over on my Instagram Stories, so make sure you’re following along there!

Until next time,

I love how you approached the English cottage kitchen not as a trend, but as something that honors the character and history of the home; that really comes through in your design choices.

I also appreciate the honesty about the budget constraints and timeline. A $3,750 kitchen renovation is no small challenge, especially when you’re balancing appliances, finishes, and functionality; it really highlights how much intention and creativity matter more than unlimited resources.
