I have always been a design geek. I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t trying to put my personal stamp on my living spaces, DIY’ing something I couldn’t find or couldn’t afford to buy, and last year where we renovated a distressed property into an Airbnb. A Life Unfolding is where I share design, decor, DIY’s, and all things home.
Easy ways to add a cozy vibe to your home in January.
The January blues got you down? Looking for a January refresh?? I hear ya! Don’t let the post-holiday slump steal your winter cheer! Instead, transform your home into a haven of comfort and coziness. With a few simple tweaks, you can wrap yourself in warmth, ditch the January blues, and embrace the longer winter nights. So grab your favorite throw blanket, light a candle, and get ready to snuggle up in style. Let’s look at some easy ways to add a cozy vibe to your home in January.

Clean, Clean, and Declutter:
Start small: Tackle one area at a time, like a drawer or shelf. Donate or sell items you no longer need. A clean, clutter-free space feels so much cozier!
Embrace baskets and bins: These are great for corralling clutter and adding a decorative touch. I use this one and love these baskets to help contain everything from dog toys to extra throws.
Let the light in: Open curtains and blinds to brighten up your space and make it feel more inviting. More light is one of my favorite tips for beating the winter blues.
Layer on the Cozy:
Throw blankets and pillows: Pile them on your couch or bed for instant coziness. Choose soft textures like faux fur, cable knit, or velvet.
Layer Area rugs: Add warmth and definition to your floors with a cozy rug. Opt for wool, shag, or faux fur for maximum comfort.
Lay down a cozy rug by the bed. This is a great way to step out of bed onto something soft and warm.
Throw on some sheepskins:Faux Sheepskin can add a touch of luxury and is perfect for draping over chairs or benches.
Switch Out Some Art:
Swap out your prints for warmer, wintery ones. Think landscapes like this one or abstract art in rich hues.
Create a gallery wall of vintage finds or family photos. This is a personal touch that will make your space feel more inviting.
Add some greenery: Houseplants are not only beautiful but also purify the air. Choose low-maintenance varieties like snake plants or ZZ plants. This DIY plant wall is an excellent way to display plants.
Create a mini terrarium: This is a fun and easy way to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside and a great DIY for beginners.
Display natural materials: Use wood, stone, woven baskets, and other natural materials in your decor for a cozy, earthy feel.
Fresh Flowers Make Me Happy:
Fill your home with the fresh scent of flowers. Choose seasonal blooms like tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths.
Get creative with your vases. Use vintage bottles (or, in my case, pretty liquor and wine bottles), mason jars, or even empty candle jars.
Place flowers in unexpected places. Try your nightstand, bathroom counter, or kitchen windowsill. I used little vases to make a fresh flower valance in a bedroom.
Candles for Warmth and Scent:
Fill your home with the warm glow of candles. Choose scents that evoke cozy feelings, like vanilla, cinnamon, or this fireside candle.
Group candles together for a bigger impact. Try a mix of pillar candles, votives, and tea lights. Or try the very trendy new skinny candles.
Don’t forget the safety factor! Never leave burning candles unattended. that is the primary reason I am such a HUGE fan of candle warmers. I love this one and this one.
As I settle into my own cozy corner, a steaming mug of tea in my hands, I can’t help but smile. Adding simple touches of comfort has turned January from a month to endure into a season of comfort for me. So go forth, my friends, and create your own cozy spaces. Fill your home with laughter and love and so much January coziness!
