Hi there! I’m popping in this week to give you an update on our back entryway. We’d been making such great progress, and then, as they say… life happened! First, a huge storm blew through our area, knocking down a tree in our backyard – thankfully, no one was harmed and nothing was damaged, but we did have to pause for a few days to clean up. Just as we were about to get started again, we discovered a sewage leak at one of our short-term rentals. That problem was much more of an issue and ended up putting us weeks behind. But, finding a silver lining, I was able to really take my time choosing a color, and I am absolutely in love with how these doors turned out! Shall we take a peek at painting our back entryway doors SW 7062 Rock Bottom?
A reminder of where we started:
I am smitten with the dark paint color trends that are trending right now, and for our back entryway, it felt like the perfect choice. While some might shy away from dark colors in an entryway, we are fortunate to have an abundance of natural light pouring into this space. I truly believe that a rich, dark hue will create a sophisticated look and provide a striking contrast with the wall mural. A bonus is the color will allow the doors to become a real focal point rather than just fading into the background.
Here is the back door color when we bought the house. It is very close to SW Cityscape
Please ignore that awful carpet. We replaced it with tile.
When it came to picking the perfect color, I did a deep dive into various dark paint color options. I was leaning into a Navy Blue to begin with. But because I really liked the original color of the door when we bought the house.
I’ve used Sherwin Williams Iron Ore on stairs before, and it’s a fantastic deep charcoal, Urbane Bronze (see it here), which I adore on the ceilings in our basement project, also crossed my mind. Other contenders included Black Fox, which has a bit more of a brown undertone, and even Tricorn Black, a true black that, while always a favorite of mine, was just a little too black for the warm undertones I was hoping for in this space. Ultimately, the deep grey-green undertone of Sherwin Williams Rock Bottom felt like the perfect fit, offering that classic look with a touch of unexpected color.

For entryway doors that are going to see a lot of traffic, durability is key. That’s why I chose HGTV Sherwin-Williams Door & Trim Paint in a beautiful gloss finish. I adore the SW color family and I also love that you can find this paint at your neighborhood Lowes store! How convenient is that?!? This house will be a vacation rental during the summers, so holding durability is a priority!
I painted the walls a few weeks ago. They are SW Alabaster.

This quality paint is specifically formulated to withstand daily wear and tear, which helps ensure that our newly painted doors will look fantastic for years to come.
I loved the way the doors looked so I decided to paint the stair rails too.
The gloss finish not only adds a lovely sheen that bounces light beautifully but also makes the doors incredibly easy to clean – a must-have for a high-traffic area like a back entryway.
I couldn’t be happier with how our back entryway doors turned out!
I have been working on this Entryway project as part of the Spring One Room Challenge, and when I started, I loved the opportunity to tackle a smaller space, thinking I’d knock it out in just a few weeks. Instead, it’s taken almost eight! But it just goes to show that even a little bit of color can make a huge impact and totally transform a space. Be sure to stop by the One Room Challenge website to see everyone else’s spaces – they are absolutely beautiful and full of inspiration!
