Are you ready to bring a touch of fall into your home? Picture this: floral arrangements that pair the vibrant hues of autumn blooms with the natural beauty of pears and apples.
It’s September in Michigan, meaning the fruit trees are ready for harvest. Today, I am going to take advantage of that abundance by combining Fruit and flowers into a couple of Fall arrangements.
Adding Fruit to the vase is a quick -and foolproof way to add your Fruit. But you can also add the Fruit to the flowers with floral pics or skewers. A third option is to slice your Fruit and add it to the vase water. This works best with citrus fruit. I made one this Spring with blood oranges.
Creating your fall floral arrangement all starts with selecting the perfect blooms. This is where your personal taste and the desired aesthetic come into play. As you peruse your local grocery store (hello, Trader Joe’s), flower shop, or garden center, keep in mind the colors and textures that give off an autumn vibe. Rich reds, warm oranges, deep purples, and earthy yellows (think sunflowers) are all excellent choices to capture the spirit of the Fall season.
Start by adding your Fruit (in my case, red pears) to a vase filled with water. The pears in this Fall Fruit and Flower arrangement will help hold the cut flowers in place.
Next, remove any leaves that will be in the water. This will help your arrangement last longer. Give each stem a fresh cut on the diagonal.
Start adding your flowers. Here, I am beginning with my fill flower (seeded eucalyptus) and filling out the vase. I also like to see that they drape over the rim a bit. Next, I add my largest bloom, the Goldenrod, and then continue adding blooms until you like how it looks.
Here are the finished Fruit and flowers. The fall arrangement styled. Ta Da!
For this next floral arrangement, I will add the pears directly to the arrangement.
Tape a grid on your vase. Floral tape is much better for this; I didn’t have any around. This will keep your blooms from moving around too much and provide some stability for your Fruit.
Use a skewer and insert it into your pears (apples would work here also). I added some lemon juice to prevent them from browning where the skewer entered.
Once again begin adding your blooms. Once the florals are where you like them it’s time to add the Fruit (more red pears) because I am using a large fruit I am using them as focal points within the arrangement. Position them strategically to draw the eye and create a central point of focus amidst the surrounding blooms. This not only adds a touch of whimsy but also reinforces the fall vibe I was going for here.
Change the water daily and retrim the blooms. As the blooms fade, throw them out. The pears in water with the eucalyptus lasted for almost two weeks, while the pears in the second arrangement lasted about four days.
What do you think? Would you add Fruit to your flowers?
