I have always been a design geek. I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t trying to put my personal stamp on my living spaces, DIY’ing something I couldn’t find or couldn’t afford to buy, and last year where we renovated a distressed property into an Airbnb. A Life Unfolding is where I share design, decor, DIY’s, and all things home.
Have you heard the term Biophilic Design as a trend for 2025? It’s been on my radar for a while (and a personal favorite when it comes to design styles), and I thought I’d pop in and share my take on it. Don’t know what it is? Let’s dive in: Have you ever noticed how much better you feel when surrounded by nature? Even if you are not necessarily an “outdoorsy” person? That’s the magic of Biophilic Design! Today, I am sharing Easy Ways to Add Biophilic Design into Your Home and how to bring the outdoors in and create calming spaces that help us relax and unwind.
Biophilic Design is essentially about incorporating nature into our indoor living spaces. Think of it as a love letter to the outdoors! While adding a few houseplants is a great start, Biophilic Design goes beyond that. It’s about fostering a deeper connection between indoor and outdoor environments, creating spaces that make us feel calm, happy, and healthy.
2. Let’s talk about adding Plants and Greenery to Your Home.
Plants are the easiest way to bring the outdoors in. The key is in choosing plants for your particular space. They can be easier to care for than you think.
Start small: Begin with a few easy-to-care-for plants like snake plant or pothos.
Embrace the Lush: If you’re a plant enthusiast, don’t be afraid to fill your home with a variety of greenery.
3. Other Ways of Adding Biophilic Design
Okay, now let’s get creative! Here are some other ways to bring the outdoors in:
Let the light in: Open your curtains and blinds to allow for plenty of natural sunlight.
Embrace natural materials in your home’s architectural features: Use elements such as wood, stone, and brick as accent walls, countertops, backsplashes, flooring, fireplace surrounds, etc.
Connect with the outdoors: Create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
4. Engaging All of Your Senses: Sounds, Scents, and More:
A few more easy ways to add Biophilic Design into your home.
Use clean, natural scents:
Fresh flowers- especially highly scented ones- like hyacinths, garden roses, freesia, and honeysuckle.
Herbs can also add delightful natural aromas to your home. An herb garden in the kitchen or even a simple pot of lavender or rosemary smells heavenly.
Homemade simmer pots are a delightful way to scent your space.
Hang fresh eucalyptus bundles (lavender works too) from your shower head and can feel like your having a spa day! I love this and it’s amazing when you are feeling under the weather.
Essential oil diffusers can introduce calming scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint.
Textures and Touch:
Incorporate natural materials in your furniture choices. Think wood coffee tables, rattan side tables, and woven light fixtures.
Add natural fibers like cotton and linen with textiles.
Consider adding a cozy rug (try layering rugs for an extra made from natural materials like wool or jute.
Sounds of Nature:
Incorporate natural sounds like birdsong, rainfall, or ocean waves through a sound machine or natural soundscapes.
Consider a small tabletop fountain for the soothing sound of trickling water.
