Tools Needed for Arranging:

  • Scissors
  • Glass Vase (one that will fit inside your watermelon)
  • Floral Grid (optional, but helpful for support)
  • Small Round Watermelon (look for one with a flat end!)
  • Scoop (for hollowing out the watermelon)
  • Floral Tape
  • Floral Preservative

I love arranging fresh flowers for myself, and this time of year, they are so plentiful it’s wonderful to find them everywhere. I keep a few tools on hand to make it easier. You can shop them at my Amazon Storefront Here.

Types of Flowers To Use:

When it comes to flowers, anything goes here! Just think summer. I went with the typical red, white, and blue theme for a festive 4th of July look, but it’s summer, so you do you! Keep your arrangement informal for that easy-breezy summer feel.

  • White Daisy Mums
  • Blue Delphinium
  • Red Mini Carnations
  • Trailing Eucalyptus

Assembling Your Watermelon Vase Centerpiece:

This is where the fun begins!

*When shopping for your watermelon, find one that will lie flat on one end.

Prepping the Watermelon Vase:

Start by placing your watermelon on a flat surface. Then, cut it in half, leaving one end large enough to place your chosen vase inside.

Once the watermelon is cut, scoop out the watermelon and place in a bowl. I am going to use mine to make Watermelon Margaritas! Yum!!

Fill your vase with warm water and preservative. Place your vase inside the scooped-out watermelon.

Now is the time to add the flower grid if you are using one. I like to use these as they help hold the flowers in place as you arrange. If you don’t have one handy, you can use floral tape (or even scotch tape in a pinch, like I show here) to make your own grid.

Add the flower grid to the top of the vase and then tape it to the sides of the watermelon.

Prepping Your Flowers:

Remove any leaves that fall below the waterline in your vase. Submerged leaves can get a bit funky and cause bacteria to grow, which will shorten the life of your flowers.

TIP: To give your flowers the best chance at a long, happy life, you should trim each stem at an angle using clean scissors or clippers.

First, I like to start with the greenery to create the base and establish the overall shape of my arrangement. I’m using the holes in my floral grid to support the eucalyptus, letting it spill out a bit. Don’t worry about any gaps just yet; we’ll fill those in later!

Next up, it’s time for the stars of the show! My daisies are definitely the focal flowers here, so I’m adding those in next to establish the main point of interest.

Then, I’m bringing in my secondary flowers—the bright red mini carnations. They’re absolutely perfect for a festFourth 4th of July pop of color!

After that, it’s time for the delphinium. These beautiful blue blooms are smaller and more delicate, and they really help to complement the daisies, adding depth and visual interest to the whole arrangement.

Finally, I go back and add more eucalyptus (or whatever greenery you’re using!) to fill in any remaining gaps. This helps create a really full, balanced, and lush look.
