You guys!!! Today I am sharing a vintage crate upcycle that may be my all-time favorite find EVER!
I turned this vintage find into a modern planter.
Take a peek and I am sure you will see why.
For $35.00 I was dancing with glee.
Although I spell my name “Libbie” and I was actually tormented as a child by the Libby’s jingle, I have always wanted to find one of these crates.
Carrying it to the register I had the perfect plan in mind.
I couldn’t wait to get started!
First I wiped the crate down and used a bit of wood conditioner to bring the colors back.
While I was wiping it down I noticed a few nails that were sticking out so we hammered them back in.
Just lightly tap the nails back into the crate.
Since I was going to use the vintage crate as a planter, I wanted to put a few coats on the crate to protect it from the elements.
This fast-drying poly from Minwax is my favorite.
When searching for legs, I found hairpin legs at a reasonable price on Amazon.
I knew that I wanted this piece to be pretty tall. So, I ordered 20-inch legs.
The legs took maybe five minutes to add.
Seriously the easiest DIY ever.
Vintage crate to Modern Planter in less than 30 minutes (plus shipping time for the legs) π
Just add plants!
Truly this made me so happy!
Do you have a vintage find that just made you clap your hands in glee? I’d love to hear about it.
Until next time,
-Libbie

Hi Libbie!
You have such a creative eye! I love that it says your name on the crate ( even if spelled differently). It adds such character as a planter.
Have a great week!

This is so adorable and clever!! Nice job π
I envy you have a crate named after you – even if it is the wrong spelling. But Sara’s food products just wouldn’t have the same ring to it – lol. Love your planter!!
What a stunning find and beautiful repurpose. She looks so elegant with her hairpin legs. Love it!!

This is MARVELOUS. What a wonderful use of that crate–and I love that it’s a Libby’s crate! I had no idea you could purchase hairpin legs from Amazon; that’s a great resource.
Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party at Imparting Grace. I’m featuring you this week!
This is gorgeous! I love everything about it. I featured it today at the Thursday Favorite Things party. Congrats! π
So cute. And it did look easy to make. Love the idea of buying legs you just screw in.
Visiting from Imparting Grace. I love this idea. When there’s not room in the house for something that needs a shelf or horizontal space, it works great as a planter. I never would have thought of that. Neat idea!
This is fantastic. I have a vintage box similar to this. It will be my next project !

Love this. So cute. I have some old crates I want to do this with. Did you line the box with plastic or does the finish work for water barrier?
I left the plants in their containers! It fit 3-6 inch containers perfectly.
It’s so pretty. Nice DIY for single moms like me.. Thank you very much

Clever ! However, I always caution people if they intend to have any hairpin legs — small pets can get their head stuck in that hairpin leg
Good Point! Would not have occurred to me as my pup weighs in at a 120 lbs. π
Awesome idea! What size legs did you use ?
