It is finally Spring in Michigan, so I thought I’d share my plan for refreshing the outdoor living space at our Pentwater Short-Term Rental property. This is the upper portion of the deck that we finished last May.

The fire table is my absolute favorite outdoor piece! A bit of a splurge, but I bought it from WayFair’s Wayday sale last year, and I don’t regret it a bit.
How to refresh an outdoor living space.
- Clean thoroughly- We will start by power washing the deck.
- Determine seating area
- Choose a focal point- Mine will be a faux green wall with outdoor art.
- Add an outdoor rug or two.
- Accessorize
- Plants, Plants, Plants.
This is where we are beginning. This is the lower level. My first plan (after power washing the deck) is to add a faux green wall to the trellis door to hide the storage. Then I would like to add to seating areas. One area will be a small table with two chairs for morning coffee, a second area with seating for four people that could be used for board games, and a quiet place to read a book or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. This level will definitely get some much-needed outdoor lighting during this refresh.
Items to refresh an outdoor living space.
Pillows, rugs, and lighting all go a long way to making an outdoor living space a cozy place where people want to spend time. Colorful flowering (low maintenance) plants will add pops of color.
I’ve been pulling together a list of items I would like to use in the space. Because time is running short, it’s Amazon to the rescue!

More Tips for your outdoor living space.
- Keep it comfortable! Add ottomans, throws, and soft goods for comfort.
- Indoor/Outdoor flow. I like the outdoor living area to be an extension of the inside.
- Add an outdoor bar. Always fun!
- Plan for storage. Add a deck box or furniture covers to protect furniture/cushions.
